Qiyanni Bowie
Based in Madison Alabama,16-year-old Qiyanni Bowie has been creating art her entire life, although she has only been painting for the past 5 years. Drawing inspiration from the Black community and all its aesthetics, Qiyanni depicts her appreciation of the beauty in simply being through portraiture. Although she has an interest in exploring a variety of mediums, Qiyanni has developed a newfound comfort in painting with oil. As a junior at James Clemens High School, she pushes herself to take steps outside of her comfort zone, starting with showcasing her artwork for the first time at a local annual Juneteenth festival this past June. With the immense support of her family and friends, Qiyanni plans to pursue her dreams and make a lasting career in art. After graduation, she plans to attend the school of her dreams, Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA. Still learning about herself and her art, Qiyanni will take the next year to prepare to the best of her ability to ensure all her dreams and aspirations become a reality.
Artist Statement
My work depicts the value of mindfulness, a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings and thoughts. Unfamiliar with the concept, until recently, I convey my growing admiration for those who take the time to simply exist in and enjoy those serene moments that give value to life. Even on the rough surface of the wooden board, the subject of my painting, adorning nature's crown, is gracefully depicted in a calm state with an unbothered expression. Just existing. Using earthy tones of browns and greens, colors that resonate with my own sense of serenity, I create parallels between myself and my subject. I encourage myself to be more conscious of my own mental and emotional health by taking the time to enjoy the present.
